Why can't gas tanks all be put on the same side?

It would make it alot easier to get into a gas station. Like the older cars were all in the rear. Makes sense to me. Any reasons why not all on same side?

I would think it would be a bit safer to put the filler neck on the passenger side (for the driver, anyways)
It is a longer walk for the driver then but it might lead to them seeing a low tire or something on the passenger side that they normally might never see.

There is 1-way traffic even at the gas station. You enter by the "In" entrance and leave by the "Out" exit.

If all cars have their tank openings on the same side, half of the pumps cannot be used (the pump islands have pumps on both sides). It would be more expensive to have 1-sided pumps especially where underground storage tanks are concerned -- they would have to be spread over a larger area.
