What do you think we should do to get a law passed for kids to have to wear seatbelts on schoolbusses. Our kids need to be safer and someone needs to make a move to make it a law just like any other moving vehicle law. You have to wear a seatbelt!!

You could also start a petition. If you get enough signatures, the state has to discuss this issue (because if that many of their citizens believe in it and don't get what they want, they know that there will be many riots and such).
If you just want to do it locally in your town, contact your school or the bus company that provides transportation for your town.

Who's gonna pay the nearly $10,000 per bus cost to retrofit all existing buses? Once retrofitted or replaced, who makes sure all of the kids put the belts on? Where's the assurance that they'll keep the belts on? What about those kids who decide to use the belts and buckles to torture other kids? You certainly cannot expect the driver who is trying to watch the road to keep all of these things in check. So do we add another "paid person" to ride the bus just to keep an eye on the kids? Again, where is the money for that going to come from? In Ohio, where I live, schools receive much of thier funds from property taxes. Most schools struggle to keep the ends meeting, and when they do put a levy up, it's a battle to get one to pass.

It's also about statistics. Bus accidents with injuries to the riders are newsworthy for sure, and that's why we all hear about them, but they are not all that common either. True, they happen more than airline crashes, but most bus accidents do not result in significant injuries to the riders and they don't make the national news. When an accident happens that kills anyone on a bus, then it's on the nightly news and everyone is outraged. But statistically, you are far safer on a bus with no seatbelts that you are in a car with seatbelts and airbags.
