In general I do, but I'm a solidly built male so I don't appear as too much of a target, but I just go by a gut instinct. And well I'm still here so it hasn't harmed be but being a night-time petrol station operator I'm always in high risk environment so I don't think too much of it. So my advice would be If you feel comfortable with it go for it, If not don't because the uncertainty will make you more likely to be a targetNever pick up hitchhikers. You run the risk of physical danger and your insurance will NOT cover you.
