Bridgestone Firestone North America Tire, LLC (BFNT) has a practical suggestion for commemorating the presidency of Abraham Lincoln. While Lincoln is broadly associated with a multitude of accomplishments and characteristics, from his humble upbringing to the Gettysburg Address, perhaps a lesser-known claim to fame is Honest Abe's contribution to 21st century automotive maintenance.

What do you do if your brakes stop working?

That's right, Abe Lincoln has made a significant contribution to car care. The Lincoln penny test has become a tried-and-true method of determining when it's time to get new tires. The procedure is as simple as placing a penny in the tread and using Abe Lincoln's likeness as your guide.

Would anyone care to share with me their driving test experiences?

Here's the three-step "penny test:"

Went does a commerical vehicle need license plates?

1. Take a penny and pinch Abe's body between your thumb and forefinger.
2. Put Lincoln's head into one of the grooves on the tread. Select a point on your tire where tread appears the lowest.
3. If any part of Abe Lincoln's head is obscured by the tread, you're driving with the legal and safe amount of tread. If you can see above his head, where it says "In God We Trust," take a hint: you're ready for a new tire.

Do I have a chance of getting my car fixed by the person who hit me?

Why worry about tread depth? If your tread gets below 2/32 of an inch, your car's ability to grip the road in adverse conditions is greatly reduced. Furthermore, insufficient tread is not only dangerous; in many states it is illegal (legal tread depth is 2/32 of an inch - the exact distance from the tip of Abe's head to the rim of a penny).

When driving what is the right of way, and how do i know who has it?

look on your tires and follow the tread around and you should find a line that crosses thr tread at 90 degrees. this is the wear line. when the tread is wore down level with that line its time to replace your tires. the tire dealer was measuring the depth at this point i presume. you should be ok but you may want to rotate the frnt to the rear, always have your best tread on the front as you are able to handle a blowout on the rear much better than one on the front

Who has the right of way?

Tires have a "wear bar" located on them. If you look at the tire and follow the "valley" between the treads around the circumference of the tire you will find a raised piece in the valley of the tire. If your treads have worn down to or past the raised piece then the tire should be replaced.

Can the human eye cause accidents due to misconceptions?

Most all-season passenger tires when new are molded at 10 to 11/32" tread depth. Molded into the tread are "wear indicator bars" that are flush with the tread when it is worn down to 2/32" remaining. This is the legal minimum in most (but not all) states. However, below 4/32" remaining tread depth traction in poor weather starts to drop off rather dramatically. Testing shows there is a big difference between the traction of a tire at 4/32" vs. 2/32". Therefore, it is recommended to replace passenger tires at 4/32".
