look on your tires and follow the tread around and you should find a line that crosses thr tread at 90 degrees. this is the wear line. when the tread is wore down level with that line its time to replace your tires. the tire dealer was measuring the depth at this point i presume. you should be ok but you may want to rotate the frnt to the rear, always have your best tread on the front as you are able to handle a blowout on the rear much better than one on the front

Tires have a "wear bar" located on them. If you look at the tire and follow the "valley" between the treads around the circumference of the tire you will find a raised piece in the valley of the tire. If your treads have worn down to or past the raised piece then the tire should be replaced.

Most all-season passenger tires when new are molded at 10 to 11/32" tread depth. Molded into the tread are "wear indicator bars" that are flush with the tread when it is worn down to 2/32" remaining. Testing shows there is a big difference between the traction of a tire at 4/32" vs. 2/32". Therefore, it is recommended to replace passenger tires at 4/32".
