Because they're stupid. This is not only for their own safety, but others as well. A few months ago, a bunch of teenagers were joyriding....no problem yet....4 teens in the car....2 front seat and 2 back seat....1 idiot in the back seat was too "MACHO" to wear a seat belt. Driver lost control of the car and rolled several times in the ditch. Mr. Macho and the other three people all died at the scene. Macho Man died when he was thrown out of the vehicle and the car landed on top of him. Before doing so, his body bounced all over the car on the inside, killing the other three. "Human Projectile" is what the police investigators called it. This is no joke....This is a true story. This accident happened within 5 miles of my home.SO, think about this before whining about "It's my life" and "Personal Freedom". Others have the right to live as well. In a head on collision. the occupants of the front seat are protected by air bags, and seat belts, but not from a human body hitting them in the back of the head at 60 MPH. So, for G**'s sake, BUCKLE UP.
Who know's. As long as I wear mine all the time, I really don't care about idiots. Have enough to worry about when the cut me off, or merge over me driving down the road. Gotta love them cell phones.

I understand your question fully. I often ask myself that. As soon as I get into my car, I automatically place my seat belt on and so do my children. But the question that I don't understand is why does a person who rides a motorcycles not wear a helmet? My uncle had an accident and it messed him up really bad...I mean really bad and he WAS wearing a helmet at the time. Imagine the damage that could have been caused if he hadn't! But back to seat belt issue, I always advocate the need for seat belts to my friends and family and they have been known to save lives. They wouldn't make it a law in many states requiring them to be worn if it wasn't for a reason.Who knows what the age law for driving in NJ is?
My sister says she just forgets. I had a bad car wreck about 6 yrs ago and ever since then I always wear mine. It's the first thing I do! It has nothing to do with the distance driven. We as a society don't need someone telling us to do things like that, it should be a choice. The government needs to keep their nose out of peoples personal lives, and yes...like your house, when you get in your car people should leave you alone, unless you are driving dangerously. What happens if I get in a wreck is between three entities....ME, my health care provider and my auto insurance....NOT THE GOVERNMENT!! If I am hurt and they choose not to pay, that's my tough luck. If the wreck is someone else's fault...I'm in the clear, they have to pay anyway!My not wearing a seat belt affects ME! It doesn't affect YOU, it doesn't affect anyone else on the road so mind your business!
Besides, nobody ever publicizes the instances where seat belts actually kill people...
