All the answers look pretty good to me, but I can add one more reason. In California, the pump hose does TWO things. It obviously allows gas into your car, AND it sucks fumes back into the underground tank (through a system). If you "top off" some of the gas you payed for gets sucked back through this system into the dealers tank.

What do I do?! The pedals are too high for my little feet!?
