Weeks later I got a summons to be in court. Seems she told the police she didn't know what I was talking about. I identified her, and brought a store clerk who identified that she was there that day. She had to pay for damages, my and the clerks salary for the day we took off for court and a hefty fine.

You worked for your money and spend that money on your transportation. If someone carelessly damages it they need to pay for that. Here in Europe most people have personal insurance to cover such incidents.
