Are platform shoes actually dangerous for driving?

Question:
Some time ago, a driver got killed because her platform shoes prevented her from braking in time. But why exactly couldn't she brake? Is it really because of the shoe itself or more likely because of the driver (maybe she was not used to wearing such shoes)?

Driving alone after passing driving test?

When I learned to drive, I was taught by my driving instuctors to brake and use the accelerator with the right foot. This was for two reasons. One, if you have to drive a manual transmission, you need the left foot for the clutch. Two, from a safety standpoint, it keeps you from "riding the brakes" and accidentitally hitting the gas and brake pedals at the same time.

So, if you are in that good habit, many people have a feel for how much you have to raise your foot when switching from the gas to the brake (which isn't much). If you are wearing "platform" shoes, or any shoe with a tall sole, then you increase the chance of catching the shoe along the side of the pedal and missing it all togehter. (Mentally, you may not be in the habit of raising your foot high enough for the platform shoe!) Sure it wouldn't take but a few seconds to correct for, but in a emergency braking situation, seconds count!
