To me, a gift is a gift, period. It doesn't matter if it was for xmas, a bday, just b/c...whatever. It is rude to ask for a gift back-no matter how much it cost you. Maybe he wants it back much the same as when breakups happen, people give each other back personal items accumulated during the relationship-it's a way to not have that person who was once close and intimate to you have any part of you/your life. If there is nothing to remind you of that person, it is easier to move on, or just knowing/feeling that they no longer have the privelege of still keeping an item from you which holds post breakup memories and which once upon a time had special meaning/sentimental value behind why you gave it to them in the first place...it's kinda like if someone is no longer a part of your life, the guy might be thinking why should she even get to keep the things that have a connection to him.
