This is a Highway marking question, please don't look up the answer, but what do you think these mean?

Question:
What do you think little short bars or lines (maybe 1 foot long) mean in at the beginning of a lane of traffic?
What about a solid white line, what do you think that means?
What about long white bars or lines (3 or 4 feet long) mean?
and last, what do you think a 1 foot wide white bar perpendicular or across the traffic lane means?
I was just curious if these meanings were obscure to the driving public. Thanks.
