Question:
When behind certain emergency vehicles, I notice short lengths of chain hanging down, dangling near the rear. What are they used for? They seem more common over the past two or three years. Is it some kind of device for traction?

If my airbag deploys while I am wearing glasses will my eyes be subject to greater injury?
These chains are used in the winter time. When it snows they flip a switch in the cab of the vehicle and the chains will spin under the tire so they won't have to get out of the vehicle to put chains on the tires. It is a great system because it is very difficult to put chains on tires that large, and the time to do it would not make it too feasable. What kills more people in auto accidents?

Probably to ground them from an electrical charge...How often do you look at your rear view and side mirrors when you drive?
no it's not to ground the vehicle from electricity. they are normally used to help pull on other objects or vehicles. perhaps to help free the person inside to help rescue them. What could cause a vehicle to spontaneously burst into flames?
Some vehicles have ground straps, but they are normally not chains. If it is a short piece of heavy chain look for a trailer hitch; the chain is probably a safety chain in case the tongue of the trailer comes loose from the ball hitch. What year was the driving test introduced in the UK?
What you are seeing are automatic tire chains. They hang from a wheel that whips them in front of the tires to help get more traction. They are activated by a switch on the dash. This way they don't have to take the time to put on tire chains, and that can be pretty important when they are coming to save your butt.More Questions & Answers ...
