Today morning when I tried to open my car from driver's side it did not open as the key was turning free. So I had to open it from the other side. Just now as I was examining the driver side lock the whole socket came out with the key, leaving an empty space. I am confused what to do and how to leave my car like this for the night (though it has a security system but sill). I have a 1993 VW jetta 4 door.

Sounds like someone tried to force it with a screwdriver. You will need to get the lock cylinder replaced which requires removing the inner door panel for access.
