Car Survival Kit; What to Include?

Question:
I was wondering what to include in a survival kit to keep in my car. I know a first aid kit is a definate, space blanket, and food. But what else should I include? I've seen ones on eBay that are complete and cover the basics to up to a week, but I don't want to pay $80 + for a emergency kit for my car if I can make one myself cheaper.

What is the Weight Requirement for a passenger to sit in a seat with an Airbag?

So what should I include? Please make a complete list, and if you know the average price please include that as well. And if you know of a website that has information on what to have in one then post it as well. Thanks.

Three most important things:

1. Communication: A way of signalling distress (the old mobile phone sounds like a good idea, I might have to implement that). Also, some way of warning passing drivers may well be a good idea.

On highway, before change lane, found one car on my blind spot, what should I do?

1) An old cell phone that plugs into the cig lighter - there's no service on them, but you can still call 911
2) A spotlight ($15) that plugs into the cig lighter for changing tires or whatever
3) A poncho (for rain)
4) A batteryless flashlight (shake to use) because batteries die in cold weather
5) Gloves
6) Blanket

Could someone please explain the Overdrive button on an automatic transmission?

First off the basics should include a good flashlight. Drinking water, snack bars,a small 1st aid kit and a blanket. If you really need it a basic tool kit comes in handy too. Jumper cables and a can of Fix a flat. A quart of oil, transmission fluid and power steering fluid too. That about covers most situations. You can "built" your kit a little at a time to save money. Frequently the packaged kits are over rated. If you need some more in depth information go to AAA.com.

What do you think of this?

a rotating stock of balance bars
A small Butane lighter
Small AM/FM radio with extra batteries

Serious question?

Also, if you live in a snowy region, include something to dig out around your tailpipe should you get stuck in a drift or ditch. If the exhaust pipe is blocked, carbon monoxide and other harmful fumes can back up into the cabin area. Kitty litter or pieces of wood are great if you get stuck, too. If you put them right in front of the tires, it gives them something to grip other than snow, hopefully getting you un-stuck. I keep a bag of cheap kitty litter in my trunk just for that reason, and it works like a charm.

I'm sure one of you knowledgable lot will know...?

In addition to whats been mentioned, a set of dry clothes, especially socks can be a big help if you get wet. A small travel kit with toothbrush, toothpaste, etc will help you keep your wits if stranded. Keep some dry foods too.
