Is a 4wd SUV safer than a 2WD SUV?

Question:
I do not plan on hauling anything or driving off the road. I just want something safe for my kids ride in. The advantage that I seen with 2WD is that they are cheaper and more fuel efficient. So why should I buy a 4WD?

You shouldn't unless you do a lot of off-road driving or hauling. Save that gas money put it on something else you need.

True or false: SUV's don't make your important, and these gas hogs should be banned.?

I drive a 4WD jeep cheerokee because I live in the mountains and work at a ski resort. Having a 4WD vehicle is safer where I live, but If you don't need the 4WD than you can save money when you purchase it. But if you think you will ever need it, get it. It won't be more gas unless yo engage the 4WD, otherwise you are just driving in 2WD, it takes the same amount of gas as a SUV with only 2WD. What you don't want to get is an allWD, that means 4WD is engaged all the time, and that will eat up gas, especially if you don't need it.

Will a baby seat fit in the back of a 2007 Mustang GT?

I don't see how additional weight of a transfer case is going to make your car any safer. Either the seatbelts and airbags do their jobs or they don't. that additional weight can add up to thousands in fuel cost over the life of your vehicle.

my friend was in a car accident.?

Remember that most 4wd vehicles get 2 to 3 miles less per gallon than a 2wd. That's a couple gallons more used per fill up. at $3 a gallon and a couple fill ups a week, your standing to loose $500 a year. or $2500 over 5 years. Just something to think about.

The drivetrain on your vehicle won't make a bit of difference in an accident, and may only be useful to you a few days a year.

Worry about the safety features of the SUV you plan to buy, and down worry about the drive train.

In my humble opinion, 2wd with traction control or stability control will do you more good financially over the long run than 4wd or even awd.

SUV safety depends largely on the driver of the vehicle. The only other thing to consider is whether or not you live in a colder climate where you would be using the 4x4 more than a month or so a year. Otherwise, a 2WD should serve your purposes just fine.

An AWD car is safer than an SUV. SUV's rollover more easily and have poor accident avoidance due to their handling deficiencies.

It's a common misconception that SUV's keep you safe.

Car accidents?

If you must buy an SUV though, then I would look for one that is unibody/car based and has car-like handling characteristics. The big "trucky" SUV's aren't safer. They are only appropriate if you are towing a giant boat or something. In any other case they are rife with compromises.

Full-time AWD is better than part-time 4x4.

Car-based unibody SUV's like the Toyota Highlander are safer than ladder-framed truck based SUV's. They also have more room inside and handle better.

2WD SUV's are typically rear-wheel drive, which means they will have poorer traction than even your average front wheel drive car when it comes to snow and ice.

As far as safety goes, 4wheel/AWD rarely helps you avoid an accident or makes you safer. What it does is it gets you out of your driveway. 4WD/AWD cannot keep you from skidding or sliding on ice.

If you live in an area where you need to drive in snow for a decent part of the year, then by all means get the AWD/4wd. If not, then 2WD should be sufficient, but I would look for a front-wheel drive car based SUV, rather than a rear-wheel drive truck based SUV.

Not really. The 4x2 is as safe than the 4x4.
4x4 will be not only a waste of money at buying time and a waste of gasoline, but also your new 4x2 will be lighter and faster.

a 4WD SUV can be safer whenever there is bad whether. I would recommend a 4WD SUV that has the 4WD as an option. You wouldn't want anything that was full time.

My last two cars had push button 4WD, and I don't haul things or go off roading, but there has definitely been times where the 4WD option came in very handy.

Have you ever been a victim of someone else's road rage?

For example, whenever it's raining really bad out, 4WD offers a lot more stability control. I also pulled into people's front yards a couple of times over the past few years (for loading/unloading), and 4WD has helped me pull out of a wet yard without tearing up the grass. Also, you won't need to worry about getting stuck ANYWHERE if you have it

I don't use the 4WD option very much at all, and the difference in gas from having the transfer case would be about as equal to the difference in the cost of paying for extra ketchup at McDonald's. you won't notice it.
With the little amount that I do actually use the 4WD option, I know that from now on, any truck/suv that I buy will have it, just because it has come in VERY handy the few times that I have actually used it.

Safe and Fuel Efficient Driving SAFED?

Actually being in an SUV would be better if you got into an accident. Imagine being in a corolla and then hitting an explorer. Id rather be in the explorer. There is more material around you in an SUV or pickup to absorb impact from a crash. Id rather be in my pickup than some little highlander if I got into an accident.
